Lobos unable to rebound

Staff Report

The UNM women's basketball team struggled in Salt Lake City on Saturday, falling to the University of Utah 75-62.

No. 16 UNM has dropped two in a row. It is the Lobos' only losing streak of the season and their first in more than two years.

After losing 60-55 to No. 19 Brigham Young University on Thursday, the Lobos were not able to rebound against the Utes.

The Lobos had a late lead at 52-51 with 7:28 remaining before Utah was able to pull away late. UNM trailed 62-60 with 3:04 remaining, but the team was outscored 13-2 in the closing minutes.

Shona Thorburn led Utah with 28 points and eight rebounds. The Utes received contributions from Kim Smith who scored 14 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, while Jessica Perry added 13 points. The usually stingy UNM defense gave up one of its highest point totals of the season.

With the loss, the Lobos drop to 16-6 overall and 6-3 in the Mountain West Conference. Utah jumped ahead of UNM with the victory, as the Utes improved to 15-5 on the season and 6-3 in conference.

Dionne Marsh scored 19 points and passed out five assists for the Lobos. Katie Montgomery put up 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Although Montgomery was able to grab seven boards, rebounding as a team hurt the Lobos. Utah outrebounded UNM 42-28, and the 29 defensive rebounds for the Utes was more than the total boards for the Lobos.
