Sports in brief

Skiing

On the back of a strong performance by the women's Nordic team, the UNM ski team took third place at the Western State Invite in Gunnison, Colo., on Saturday.

Freshman Melanie Zemp's season-high third place in the 5K classic helped the women's Nordic team win an event for the first time this season. Fellow freshman Crystin Jacques came in fourth place for her best showing of the season. Sophomore Marit Rognmo finished seventh to give the Lobos 79 points to edge out Colorado's 77.

Freshman Tor Fodnesbergene was the only Lobo to come in first when he won the giant slalom race. It was the first win of his career. Lars Loeseth and Alex Mach came in 17th and 22nd respectively as the men's Alpine team finished in fifth place.

Senior Geir-Endre Rogn came in second place in the men's 10K classic, followed by junior Dirk Grimm who placed fourth. Rogn tied his career-high finish while Grimm's fourth place was the highest he's placed in a classic race. Junior Jedd Young came in 12th to give the men's Nordic team second place.

The women's Alpine team finished fifth in the slalom as well. Freshman Karin Ohlin came in fifth, followed by Vibeke Vilhelmsen in 14th place for the best mark of her career. Senior Kathrin Spendier finished 18th.

The Lobos finished the invite with 526 points, while Denver University came in second with 556 and the University of Colorado won with 600 points.

Baseball

The UNM baseball team took two of three games against the Texas State Bobcats in San Marcos, Texas, over the weekend.

After dropping the first game 2-0, the Lobos took the Bobcats to 10 innings, where they scored four runs to win 7-3. UNM came back from a 2-1 deficit in the seventh inning before Texas State scored one run in the ninth with two outs to tie the game and send it into extra innings.

In the top of the 10th, senior shortstop Ryan Barba singled up the middle to send Ian Hollick home for the game-winning run. The Lobos added two more runs thanks to poor pitching by Texas State's Chris Hill, who had two straight walks that sent two runners home.

The third game also went into the 10th inning before junior first baseman Daniel Stovall's single sent junior center fielder Matt Foote home for the 3-2 win.

The Lobos are now 2-1 while Texas State is 1-2.

Softball

The UNM softball team finished the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., without a win Sunday.

On Friday, the Lobos dropped their first game to California State-Northridge 15-7. The University of Wisconsin beat the Lobos 5-3 in UNM's second game of the day.

The Lobos gave No. 7-ranked Stanford a run for its money before falling 3-2 on Saturday. UNM was down 3-0 before finishing just short of the upset.

In the second game of the day, host Arizona State University gave the Lobos another heartbreaker, winning 3-2.

The Lobos day didn't fare any better Sunday, as No. 5 Arizona dropped the Lobos 9-1.
