Lobos dominate outdoor track and field opener

Staff Report

Entering Saturday's Jim Click Shootout, freshman Katie Coronado had never competed at the college level.

At the Lobos' 2006 outdoor track and field opener, Coronado performed like a veteran, winning the women's javelin with a throw of 138-5. UNM dominated the event as senior Jessica McIntyre took home second (131-0) and freshman Vanessa Strobbe placed third with a throw of 127-3.

UNM had strong performances across the board in the field events. Senior Derek Mackel returned to form by winning the pole vault. Mackel earned his third victory of 2006 with a regional qualifying mark of 17-0 3/4. Mackel has six career victories in the event and participated in the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships.

Also qualifying for the NCAA regional meet was senior javelin thrower Matt Keeran who threw 218-8 and placed second overall.
