Best Student Essays is accepting entries and holding a cover-art competition for its fall 2006 issue.

The magazine is in its 18th year of publication. It publishes work from graduate and undergraduate students at the end of each semester. It offers cash prizes for the top three essays chosen by a panel of judges. First-place winners will receive $75, second place will receive $35 and third will receive $15.

Best Student Essays editor Scott Frank said the publication seeks concise, well-supported writing.

"Originality is also important, meaning something of the person's perspective," Frank said.

However, the magazine does not practice censorship, Frank said.

The publication accepts research papers, personal memoirs and photo essays. Submissions can be from any semester but must be nominated by an instructor. Essays do not have to be nominated by the instructor they were written for. They should be double-spaced and on only one side of the page.

The cover-art winner will receive $25 cash and a $25 gift certificate from the UNM Bookstore.

"A look at our current issue for spring 2006 should give artists a good idea of what we're looking for in terms of complexity," he said.

The cover from last semester is a picture of an open hand with an eye in the center against a black background.

"We lean toward simplicity in cover art," he said.

Submissions can be turned in at Room 131 of Marron Hall. The magazine is free and available in Room 131 of Marron Hall or Zimmerman Library.
