Dirty Novels

Pack Your Pistols

Available Now

If you are unfamiliar with the Albuquerque rock scene, allow me to introduce you to the Dirty Novels, a four-man band that will undoubtedly reach national acclaim. The band's album Pack Your Pistols is 10 tracks of pure spunk and glam. Formed back in 2002, the band has quite a mature and lengthy discography. To give an indication, Pack Your Pistols is its seventh album. Its songs have even been featured on MTV shows such as "Meet the Barkers," "Parental Control" and "8th & Ocean."

With catchy guitar riffs and charged vocals, the Dirty Novels are sure to put any listener into an energized mood. But beware, Pack your Pistols is not for the faint of heart - the band dials up the volume and doesn't stop for the next hour. Its musical force is as unforgiving as it is boundless. And what makes its sound so eclectic is the mixing of classic rock 'n' roll beats with the energy and tempo of other modern bands. If you missed its recent CD launch party, you will not want to miss the band's upcoming live shows. The Dirty Novels perform at Albuquerque's Cell Theatre on Saturday. Jigzaw

The Missing Piece

Available Now

Another rising Albuquerque star is rap artist Jigzaw. As one of the first people signed to local record label Royalty Life Records in 2004, his album The Missing Piece fits perfectly into the rap scene. The first single "Damn (So I Say)" is smooth, smart and sultry in its execution. Coupled with Jigzaw's velvety vocals, his ability to create rhymes at the speed he does is nothing short of astonishing. With a daunting 21 tracks to his credit on the album, he displays not only an affinity for writing but also for cutting-edge beats and performances. And for being only 19 years old, he carries himself with all the

professionalism and maturity that his older fellow rappers possess. The Missing Piece also boasts a raw-sounding bonus track featuring Cooley Sha and Sin Caane, which ends the album on a powerful note. The Missing Piece is just that - the final piece that will complete the Albuquerque rap puzzle and elevate this diverse town to a new level in the national music scene. And to think - the entire record label endeavor started in the halls of UNM's dormitories.

Styles P

Time is Money

Available Now

It has been five years since Styles P's debut album, and now, his sophomore venture attempts to make up for his absence. The opening track "G-Joint" sounds like a scene right out of a "Rocky" movie, obviously aiming to announce a comeback of sorts. Nearly every track has a featured artist - everyone from Akon to Sizzla to the late Gerald Levert. While one or two of these songs mix up the rhythm of the album, moderation is the key. At times, Time is Money feels more like a compilation CD than a work that can solely be attached to Styles P. While he and others rap about many topics - from the civil rights movement to the superfluous flashing of money, chains and lyrical mastery - the last track, "Leave a Message," plays like a voicemail to his friends, family, colleagues and urban society as a whole. Even though Styles P may have been out of the game for nearly half a decade because of legal and record-label problems, he still has the dramatic and sharp flow that many of his contemporaries are lacking.
