Great deals at Walgreens can keep you looking hip

by Marcella Ortega

Daily Lobo

It was just another Sunday afternoon in the student ghetto when a hot Latin boy showed up at our door.

He invited my roommate Eva to a Super Bowl party. She had never attended a Super Bowl party in her life, but she's always down for new experiences.

Sometimes, Cupid shoots his arrows into the hearts of the fashionably unprepared.

He walked out the door, and Eva went into a panic. She had nothing to wear. Eva is always there to tell me to calm down when I'm stressed. I couldn't let her down now. This was a job for the retail sleuth.

We had two hours to make Eva fabulous. Because we don't live in a perfect world, we got into the car and drove to Walgreens. With $15 in hand, we ran around the store in search of the most festive colors we could find.

First, we found a bright yellow sweater for $3.99. We thought yellow would go best with its opposite color, so we picked out two T-shirts - one plum and the other royal purple - for $2.50 each. At that point, we thought there was no more clothing in the store. Luckily, we were wrong. In an aisle full of heart-shaped valentines and chocolates hung a pair of provocative boxers that had "I heart you" on the back for $6. We didn't know what we would do with them, but we knew we needed them. Finally, we found a pair of teal- and plum-striped fuzzy socks for $1.

We got home, put on the Gypsy Kings and began brainstorming. Eva wanted to impress her Latin friend, so we cut the heart out of the boxers, along with the letters "Y" and "O." Eva sewed them on the front and finished the phrase in acrylic paint to read, "Yo coraz¢n futbol Americano," or "I heart football."

To complement Eva's masterpiece, I sewed a cozy skirt that was practical, yet flattering. I made the front and back of the skirt out of the plum T-shirt material and the sides out of cloth strips from the royal purple T-shirt. To match the white on Eva's sweater, I sewed a white trim along the bottom of the skirt from leftover boxer material.

In less than an hour and a half, Eva had a one-of-a-kind outfit for a one-of-a-kind man. She looked stunning, but something was missing - she needed leg warmers. So, I took the teal- and plum-striped socks and cut the feet off them.

Finally, Eva looked fabulous. We made an outfit she was born to wear, and the case was closed. Ah, the things we do for love and football.
