Editor,
As a UNM commuter student, I have found the recent comments about the $112-per-semester parking charges to be quite ignorant.
I own a South Lot parking permit and have read on the permit's top margin that it lasts for more than a full calendar year - for about 369 days. In reality, $112 pays for 3 semesters worth of parking, including the summer school session.
Thus, paying $112 for a parking permit is not such a bad bargain, even though these prices have risen over the years. Additionally, I can park wherever and whenever I please on the weekends. My father told me that I'm very fortunate to have a scholarship that waives my tuition, because Mexican college students have to pay for these costs on their own. Unless you're a wealthy person in Mexico or have good connections, you cannot afford to attend an institution of higher learning.
Having mentioned all this, we American college students have nothing to complain about. There are so many different methods of paying for collegiate expenses here in the U.S., even if you do not qualify for a scholarship.
