Editor,
Just because the mayor of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Jim Naugle, made unfounded accusations against gay men having rampant sex in public restrooms, it doesn't mean everyone should
follow suit.
Nothing stated in the article on gay men soliciting others for sex in Tuesday's Daily Lobo proves that gay students at UNM are having sex in our restrooms. Gay men are certainly not the only sexually mature adults on our campus, and condoms and sexual lubricants are not, by any stretch of the imagination, used exclusively by gay men.
The article only succeeded in painting an unfounded and negative view of respectable UNM students. Ben Lamon says he's seen evidence that gay sex occurs in our restrooms multiple times a week. However, until he actually observes multiple homosexual men copulating in our restrooms on a weekly basis, the UNM population should keep its prejudice in check and assume only what the used condoms and lubricant actually tell us: Someone male, female, gay, straight or somewhere in between is having sex in the restrooms. With a sexually mature population the size of UNM's, this shouldn't even be a surprise.
We've seen men and women's phone numbers and reputations displayed on many a bathroom wall in our lifetimes, assuming we pay any attention at all. Blaming public sexual activities on gay men is falling far from the mark.
