Calling all memoirs, essays and critiques

Staff Report

UNM's premier nonfiction review has extended its submission deadline to Oct. 12.

Best Student Essays is accepting work from any graduate or undergraduate student. Nonfiction genres include critical analyses, essays, personal memoirs, photo essays and research papers. All submissions must be nominated by a member of UNM faculty, but the papers don't have to be written for the nominator's class. Submissions can include papers from previous semesters.

Any topic is fair game, Best Student Essays editor Jay Reidy said.

"There are a lot of papers assigned and written here at UNM. BSE not only gives students the opportunity to become published writers, but to also benefit from reading the best writing by their fellow students," Reidy said. "We publish works that demonstrate clarity, specificity, well-supported arguments, and, of course, creativity and originality."

The review has added a new category this year: foreign language nonfiction. All foreign language submissions must include an English translation. In addition, the review is accepting cover art submissions, which can incorporate any medium and theme.

"Let me emphasize that we do not practice censorship," Reidy said. "Basically, we want to see a writer's personal perspective on the world, whether it's in the form of a philosophy essay, personal memoir, economic case study, literature critique, political treatise or any other type of nonfiction."

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three submissions in each category. First place garners $80, second place earns $35, and the third-place prize is $20. Written submissions are limited to a length of 12 double-spaced pages. Submission forms can be found in old BSE issues or in the Daily Lobo classifieds office in Marron Hall, Room 131. Questions about the review should be directed to Bse@unm.edu.
