Coach: Luna tried to scam state by keeping students
LAS VEGAS (AP) - The Luna Community College baseball coach said he was pressured to keep about 150 people who tried out for the team. Sam Soto said school administrators wanted to retain the players long enough to count them as students in order to earn more state money for the school. Soto did not follow orders and is now suing the school.
Explosion at oil refinery hospitalizes one worker
BIG SPRING, Texas (AP) - An explosion rocked an oil refinery Monday in a violent blast that shook buildings miles away and injured at least one person, the company said. All workers were accounted for about an hour after the explosion, said Blake Lewis, spokesman for refinery owner Alon USA. The injured worker was in the hospital, but the person's condition was not known, Lewis said.
U.S. recognizes Kosovo as independent country
PRISTINA, Kosovo (AP) - The U.S. and major European powers recognized Kosovo on Monday, a day after the province's ethnic Albanian leaders declared independence from Serbia. Kosovo's leaders sent letters to 192 countries seeking formal recognition and Britain, France, Germany and U.S. were among the countries that backed the request. But other European Union nations were opposed.
