Band defines 'punchy ambience'

For the past six months, the Fertile Crescent has been on the injured list.

"We couldn't play for four whole months because our drummer overextended his wrists from playing too much," vocalist Bryce Hample said.

The Fertile Crescent will perform at Winning Coffee Co. on March 21 along with North America and the Austin, Texas, band Bretttaylorsings.

"Winning's is always a fun place to hang out and play shows," Hample said. "The space is very open and inviting."

The Fertile Crescent is a four-piece collective that started back in 2004.

"One of our friends was putting on a show and they needed another band, so we were like, 'Hey, let's get something together and make this happen,'" Hample said.

All four members were good friends before the birth of The Fertile Crescent, which Hample said is the key factor of their direction.

Injuries aside, The Fertile Crescent kept busy writing new material and pursuing side projects.

"I have started working on a solo project called Hedia, which has a real mellow mood to it," Hample said.

The Fertile Crescent is an electronic upkeep of punchy ambience and far-out noises.

"Our first and only demo is very synth-heavy and easy to dance to," Hample said. "Since our break, the direction has been geared more towards a technically organic feel."

All bands have their own special rules and routines when writing music. For The Fertile Crescent, it can be a collective approach followed by complete isolation of all members followed up by a group affinity to the material, Hample said.

"We'll all build a song collectively, take it in individually and then come back to it and work out all the kinks," he said.

The Fertile Crescent is booking a tour that will begin in July, traveling through California and then up the West Coast.

"Nothing's completely solid yet, except for the tour's mandate," Hample said.

In the next year, The Fertile Crescent sees itself fully equipped to take on the road, record labels and any other plights that may arise.

"It's going to be a good time. We're currently looking into purchasing a touring van, and we all upgraded our equipment considerably," Hample said.
