BSE calls for student nonfiction

Best Student Essays has extended its spring submission deadline to Monday.

The deadline for submissions is now March 10.

BSE publishes all genres of nonfiction writing, foreign language nonfiction writing and photo essays.

"Students can submit to us nonfiction of any type, whether it's been written for UNM coursework or outside of class," BSE editor Jay Reidy said. "In order to cut down on plagiarism and to ensure submissions of quality, BSE requires that each submission receives a faculty nomination."

Reidy said the nomination process is simple.

"All students have to do is take their piece to any UNM faculty member," he said. "If they wrote the piece for the faculty member's class, that's fine. And if they didn't, that's fine, too. We accept nominations from any UNM faculty member."

BSE will award three cash prizes for the top three nonfiction submissions - $80 for first place, $35 for second place and $20 for third place.

The publication is in its 20th year.

"BSE now has the largest audience in its history," Reidy said.

Reidy said this is the first year BSE has accepted foreign language nonfiction. Foreign language submissions must include a complete English translation.

"Our third place winner (last semester) was the author of a French essay," he said. "There is just such a large portion of the UNM population that is proficient in a foreign language that it seemed only logical to include foreign language nonfiction in order to better represent scholarship at UNM."

The publication accepts cover art submissions in any medium. Reidy said BSE works to be as inclusive as possible.

"We're here to consider submissions of all sorts, no censorship involved," he said. "Quality takes many forms. Of course, given our audience and the exposure that our authors receive, our editorial board takes its job very seriously. We like what we publish, and we're happy seeing the authors of BSE go on to be featured elsewhere."

The length limit on written submissions is 12 double-spaced pages. Students can find submissions forms at Unm.edu/~bse. Faculty must sign the submission form to complete nomination.
