Center opens in memory of pipeline explosion

CARLSBAD (AP) - A fire training center financed from a $10 million endowment given in memory of 12 members of an extended family who died in a 2000 natural gas pipeline explosion is ready to provide training. The Permian Basin Regional Training Center will provide training on fires and hazardous material incidents.

World Bank president urges action on hunger

WASHINGTON (AP) - The president of the World Bank on Sunday urged immediate action to deal with mounting food prices that have caused hunger and deadly violence in several countries. Robert Zoellick called on governments to rapidly carry out commitments to provide the U.N. World Food Program with $500 million in emergency aid it needs by May 1.

Italy holds general election for prime minister

ROME (AP) - Italians voted Sunday in a general election that could return conservative billionaire Silvio Berlusconi to power amid a widespread sense of national decline and an economic downturn. Berlusconi, 71 and vying for his third term as premier, has blamed the outgoing center-left government for the country's troubles.
