Event raises funds to fight cancer

UNM's chapter of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority hosted its annual nacho night to raise money for cancer research.

About 200 students hung out, played board games and ate nachos Saturday.

Lucia Cook, the sorority's vice president of fraternity relations, said the event took a lot of preparation.

"The girls in the house needed to sell as many tickets as they possibly could," she said. "It's hard to sell the tickets, but luckily we had a lot of support from the Lobo community."

The sorority raised about $800 to donate to the St. Baldrick's event next Saturday.

At the event, three members of the sorority will shave their heads and donate their hair along with the money raised.

Cook said the sorority will be supportive of the girls who are shaving their heads.

"The house is full of girls who really support you. Tonight was just a small showing of the kind of support that we have for each other," she said.

Jeff Carrillo of the Sigma Chi fraternity said he had a good time.

"I showed up about 8 o'clock at night and didn't leave until about 11 or 11:30," he said. "It was a lot of fun playing games and hanging out with a lot of really cool girls."

Danielle Marquez, president of Alpha Chi Omega, said it was important for the house to try and get the word out about its activities.

"I am very happy with how it all turned out last night," she said. "In particular, I was happy to see that there were a lot of faces that I didn't know, because that means that we are gaining awareness on campus."

Cook said it's important to highlight sororities' public service events.

"It is really important to support the girls shaving their heads," she said. "It helps us show the rest of the world that Alpha Chi Omega's nacho average sorority."
