Protesting gas prices sends urgent message

Editor,

Hello, my name is Jeremy. I'm a 23-year-old communication student from Central Connecticut State University. I'm e-mailing students and faculty all across the United States in hopes of setting up a nationwide gas strike June 17 and 18.

The gas prices are gouging the pockets of millions of hardworking Americans, worst of which are the middle class and working poor. It is my hope you will set aside these two days out of your busy week to not purchase gas, in order to send a message to the extremely lucrative gas companies and our government members that the American people will no longer stand for this outrageous pricing of gas and oil. Some may say, what difference does it make if you buy gas before or after the strike? The reason is that we are sending a message: Lower the prices or face loss of profits and protests. This can only be achieved through our being united.

I realize that people have busy lives and that gas fuels our everyday practices. However, change is not without sacrifice. We all have complained about the gas prices with one another, but now is the time to turn that into action and let our voices, as Americans, be heard throughout Corporate America.

The saying "united we stand, divided we fall" is fitting for this situation. I and other Americans will sacrifice these two days in order to change the ever-growing problem, a problem that if unchecked will soon lead to $5 a gallon gas prices. So, will you take part in the nationwide gas strike on June 17 and 18 and make your strong voice heard?

If you plan on taking part in this gas strike, please e-mail me, and let me know if you will let your voice be heard with the rest of us. Feel free to e-mail anyone you know and let them know. Thank you for your time and participation.
