Don't let November's election turn into a beauty pageant

Editor,

I would like to draw attention to the latest media frenzy of Sarah Palin. Why on earth are we letting the presidential campaign become a vice presidential campaign?

The latest polls show John McCain has sneaked ahead by four points, and for what reason? Palin. Not because she is a great running mate, but because she is a woman. It is insane to see this abominable tactic working on people of voting age. This feeble attempt to get women voters that once backed Hillary Clinton is insulting to women everywhere.

When the news first broke, I thought it would surely not work, since Palin doesn't share any views with Clinton. Palin is anti-abortion - even in cases of rape and incest - anti-gay rights, is for abstinence-only education, wants to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and wants to make it mandatory for schools to teach creationism. Of course, easily swayed women are not the issue here. Most women polled said they would not change their vote just because of Palin. The biggest new supporters of Palin are men. The approval rating for Palin among men is around 70 percent, while among women it is 50 percent. I think this is probably because she is objectively attractive. That is an irresponsible way to vote. We must stick to the issues.

This could be the most important presidential race of our lives. Think about what kind of world we want to leave for future generations. Do you want to live in a country that respects your freedom and personal choices? If not, vote for Palin and McCain. Do we really need another rendition of the last eight years only with less control over our own lives? We are in college here. Please make an educated decision in November.
