Moving Student Services will make bad service even worse

Editor,

This University's inability to properly gauge the needs of its students has again been demonstrated in the recent mass e-mail sent in response to an article concerning the new Student Success Center. Is the University seriously suggesting that creating such a facility as this one mile from campus will help students?

Off the top of my head, I can point out several problems. Taking even one person away from the already inept services in Mesa Vista Hall will cause a complete meltdown. The move will invariably cause major problems - just look at the pure chaos that happened when we adopted the Banner system. Most students deal with their bureaucracy-induced headaches between classes. To get on a shuttle, leave campus, wait around for someone to deal with their problem (or just shove the problem on someone else, as is customary at UNM) and get back on the shuttle in time for class is a near impossibility.

This is an awful idea. Perhaps the University should consider asking the students for ideas in how to provide even adequate services. Gladly, I am able to sleep at night knowing I will have graduated before this catastrophic boondoggle is implemented.
