Removal of recycling bins reflects poorly on UNM

Editor,

I just learned that all the recycling bins in Mesa Vista Hall have been permanently removed because of fire code. While I recognize that fire safety is important, I also think it reflects poorly on the University to remove recycling options from its buildings.

The college where I received my bachelor's degree had recycling bins for paper, glass and aluminum cans in every hallway, but here at UNM, I've been quite disappointed in the available options. The large recycling bin near the dorms was gone all summer, even though there were plenty of students living on campus, and now I find I can't recycle old papers from my office. UNM should really work on being more recycling-friendly and do its part to help our environment and generate less waste.
