Team builds on early momentum, secures 2-0 win

The UNM women's soccer team secured its first win of the season on Friday, blanking the Baylor Bears 2-0 at the UNM Soccer Complex.

Freshman Jael Fanning scored the first goal of the game off a corner kick from senior Hannah Hand to give the Lobos momentum early.

"I think it really pumped us up after that goal," Fanning said. "It showed that we can win, and it got us in a rhythm throughout the game."

In their two previous games, the Lobos had a combined two goals on 44 shot attempts. Against Baylor, they scored two goals on 10 shot attempts.

"We had two goals in the back of the net. That was really the only difference (from the previous two games)," head coach Kit Vela said.

In the second half, the Lobos controlled possession of the ball and capped the win with a goal by Amanda Collins.

"Baylor had three defenders at the back, and they didn't have as much sitting back at the net, which made it easier for us to score," Vela said.

The Lobos' defense kept the Bears' offense in check most of the game, holding Baylor to one shot on goal.

"We connected a lot better this game, and we played as a team a lot more," Fanning said. "We just wanted it more, and we were hungry for the goals, and we got them."

Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Shannon Adragna moved into third place on UNM's all-time shutout list, recording the 14th of her career against Baylor.

Hand moved into fourth place on UNM's all-time assists list, recording the 12th of her career and second of the season.

heading into the UNM Classic this week. They will kick things off against Drake on Friday at the UNM Soccer Complex.

"I think this really helped us out to show us that we are here to win," Fanning said. "As long as we play together and get our runs going, we should be fine."

The Lobos will be without the services of senior Krista Peterson, who will be serving a one-game suspension after she was assigned a red card following an altercation with one of Baylor's players.

"It's always hard to lose a senior," Vela said. "But I can guarantee she'll be on that bench helping whoever goes in for her."
