Editor,
According to an article published by the Albuquerque Journal on Sept. 7, UNM now spends 71 percent more on executive salaries than it did in 2002. Tuition and fees have also increased by more than 52 percent since 2002.
It disgusts me to see that as I pay more every semester to attend UNM, the University asserts it cannot afford to pay custodians for a five-day work week. The University is demonstrating a serious lack of business ethics by using our money to pay more executives more money while taking money away from custodians. When President David Schmidly announces tuition increases, he flatters us with promises of better value for our buck, of pay raises for faculty, of extended library hours and of increasing diversity. Yet he fails to inform us that our money will be wasted on excessive executive and coach salaries and advertising campaigns. Instead of hiring a million-dollar coach and 11 executive and full vice presidents, the University should use our money to support all of its employees fairly.
