In the Sept. 23 article "Faculty losses trouble math department," Jens Lorenz, interim chair of the math department claims, "Graduate students and part-timers know the material, but they don't have the broad experience."
I believe if you add the years of teaching experience of the part-time instructors in the math department, they would far outnumber the years of experience of our full-time faculty. Our department's part-time instructors are experienced, competent and professional. They contribute a great deal to the department for relatively little compensation. I work tremendously hard to teach quality classes, have excellent student evaluations and genuinely care for every one of my students. Have broad experience? Yes, we do.
