Editor,
President Bush presided over the worst foreign attack on American soil in U.S. history on Sept. 11, 2001. After ignoring intelligence warnings, Bush then made the worst strategic mistake in U.S. history by occupying Iraq. Bush then presided over the worst natural disaster in U.S. history during Hurricane Katrina.
This week after House Republicans bailed on Bush's socialist bailout, the Dow crashed 777 points - the largest one-day point drop in U.S. history. The Republicans are in civil war, and the first casualty is Sen. John McCain. If the Republicans had nominated Ron Paul, they would be 30 points ahead of Barack Obama.
Like Obama said, it's time for a change. McCain has said, "The issue of economics is not something I've understood as well as I should." Last week McCain claimed to have suspended his political campaign to focus on the financial crisis, but McCain's zigzag express kept on rolling. Right before Bush's bailout failed, McCain took credit for the deal. Right after Bush's bailout failed, McCain blamed Obama for the crisis. Two weeks ago, McCain claimed the fundamentals of our economy are strong and then flip-flopped, claiming the fundamentalists he was talking about are the hard-working American workers with stagnant wages. Since then McCain has plummeted in the polls. He was for deregulation before he was against it. McCain was against Bush's irresponsible tax cuts before he was for them. John McCain did not know how many houses his family owns, which is now reported to be at least four. Barack Obama has one house. McCain owns 13 cars; Obama's family owns one hybrid car after trading in his Chrysler 300.
Republicans like McCain, Rep. Steve Pearce and Sheriff Darren White are desperate with their political campaign ads claiming that Democrats like Obama, Rep. Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich want to raise taxes on the middle class, take your guns and kill your babies. Obama has pledged to cut taxes on middle-class Americans. If you go to the campaign Web sites of McCain, Pearce or White, under the war on terror link, they all only talk about Iraq. There is no mention of the deteriorating situations in Afghanistan and Pakistan. On his Web site, White says we can't let al-Qaida have a sanctuary in Iraq.
When White visited the UNM campus last summer, I asked the sheriff how the Sunni terrorist organization al-Qaida in Iraq could have a sanctuary in a nation with a Shiite majority. I also asked White why his Web site made no mention of the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan or al-Qaida's sanctuary in Pakistan. White couldn't answer my questions. I've been calling Rep. Heather Wilson's office every few weeks for the last seven years asking about the hunt for the infamous Osama bin Laden. She couldn't answer my questions. I'm against borrowing $1 trillion from China for the disaster in Iraq. I'm against borrowing $1 trillion from China for the disaster on Wall Street. I'm against borrowing trillions for tax cuts for the rich and corporations. Who does generation 9/11 believe is going to pay off China? If they weren't so dumbed down and apathetic, they would stop dragging their flip-flops, take off their iPods, stop texting and shut this country down.
