Slander of candidates should be banned on UNM campus

Editor,

I realize this election is an important one and that people are emotionally invested in one candidate or another. This election has inspired many people to share their opinions, and that's something that a university such as ours should encourage.

What the University should not stand for, however, is spreading malicious and intentional slander. I saw a sign posted outside Zimmerman Library today proclaiming that Sen. Barack Obama promotes a "culture of death" and that he supports partial-birth abortions. This kind of language and inflammatory rhetoric has no place on this campus, and it should not be tolerated whether someone supports Obama.

We should be able to have open and honest discussions instead of inciting fear and anger on our campus. I would like to call for such false and derogatory propaganda to stop because it is neither productive nor appropriate on this campus or anywhere.
