Students, Heinrich promote early voting

Congressional candidate Martin Heinrich teamed up with the College Democrats on Tuesday to send students to the polls.

The group rallied in Cornell Plaza to inform students that early voting at the SUB began Saturday and will continue through Nov. 1.

Kelly Seibert, president of Students for Tom Udall, said anyone registered in Bernalillo County can vote early in the upper level of the SUB.

"From all the events that were done around campus, there were still a lot of students who weren't aware they can vote in the SUB," she said.

At the rally, College Democrats handed out early voting information as well as absentee ballot applications.

Freshman Marissa Anderson said she is voting by absentee but that she's glad to see students taking advantage of early voting.

"I think early voting is a great idea because the day of the actual election, there is going to be so many people at the polls, and it's going to be nuts," Anderson said. "This way, you can have it out of the way."

Heinrich, who is running against Republican Darren White, came to the rally to help the College Democrats encourage already enthusiastic students to vote early.

"I think it is incredible to see this level of engagement," Heinrich said. "I have never seen a level of engagement that I see on campus today. It is very encouraging. I look forward to seeing this generation inherit the leadership of our country."

Heinrich said it's also great that students and community members are voting early, as this will reduce stress on Nov. 4.

"When you have everyone show up on Election Day, you just get overwhelmed by a high turnout - that's when mistakes happen," Heinrich said. "I actually think early voting helps with that because it is much more manageable for the county clerks."

Student Jeff Drake said he will cast his ballot Nov. 4 because he doesn't have time to vote early.

Student Jesse Clifton said he would not vote early because he is not registered in Bernalillo County. He'll have to travel to Edgewood, in Santa Fe County, he said.

Seibert said the College Democrats did a good job advertising early voting on campus and that she's glad they were so effective in their efforts.

"Almost everyone we talked to today said that they had already early voted or that they did plan on voting today or tomorrow," she said.

Seibert said the College Democrats plan to hold rallies next week on Oct. 28 and 30. They will also have volunteers on campus every day until early voting ends, she said.
