UNMPD: Fires were caused by arson

Staff Report

Three fires broke out on Sigma Chi Road on Sunday, and police said arsonists were to blame.

UNMPD Lt. Pat Davis said one of the fires occurred at a storage shed attached to a private residence rented by students.

"The residents were evacuated safely and returned to their house," Davis said. "There was no damage to where the people were living."

Two UNM office buildings were affected and were unoccupied at the time, as they are under renovation, he said.

Fires burned through several walls and the roof of one office building, causing severe structural damage to the front, Davis said.

The back of the other office building was damaged in the fire, he said.

A UNM Police officer discovered the fires when he saw smoke coming from the area early Sunday morning, Davis said.

The Albuquerque Fire Department was alerted and responded quickly, he said.

Authorities are still looking into the fires and would not release further information.

UNMPD is asking witnesses to come forward with tips.

To report information on the fires, call UNMPD at (505) 277-2241 or, to remain anonymous, (505) 925-COPS.
