Editor,
I disagree with GPSA President Chris Ramirez. As a former staff member of the Admissions Office and someone who worked on transfer articulation, I know Admissions and the transfer articulation team works very hard with the community colleges and branches in New Mexico, as well as other states.
If students go to UNM's main page and click on "Future Students," it will take you to the Admissions Web page. Then scroll down to "Transfer Students," and it will take you to a page that has transfer guides and agreements on the right-hand side of the page. You will notice there are many agreements. This is something the transfer team in the Registrar's Office has worked hard on to keep up with for many years. The Admissions Office also goes to the two-year schools in New Mexico twice a year to recruit to make the transfer to UNM as smooth as possible for transfer students. This has been going on for many years.
Ramirez also states UNM does not encourage students to transfer. Before making statements like this, check your facts. Actually, UNM has a transfer day dedicated to transfer students. They are allowed to sign up for classes before any other UNM student and meet with advisers from the various UNM colleges and departments. This has been a successful program that has been running for many years, and all the UNM colleges participate as well as many departments. Anything the Admissions Office is doing to enhance the transfer process is only icing on a well-baked cake. I applaud all the staff in the Admissions Office because I know how many students they admit and how hard they work to make the process as painless as possible.
