'Conceptions' calls for creativity

Friday is the last day to submit writing, art and music to Conceptions Southwest.

Editor Jennifer Olson said the publication usually gets between 200 and 300 submissions.

"For the size of the University, that's not very much," Olson said. "People shouldn't hesitate to submit. You can submit up to five pieces in any category."

Conceptions publishes prose, scripts, essays, poetry, visual art, architecture and, this year, music. Original music should be notated on paper, and students must also submit an audio or MIDI file so Olson and music editor Laura Eberhardt can evaluate the music's quality.

"It was kind of a joint idea," Olson said. "The music editor has worked really hard to get this to work. We're going to have a concert in Keller Hall. The tentative date is March 3. So we'll ask everybody who contributed music submissions to get a band together or a group and perform, and we'll have it recorded and eventually include the audio CD with the magazine."

Olson said some students who make music can't read or write the notes, so she would accept just an audio file. There might not be space to print all the sheet music anyway, she said.

"Some will be represented in print and on the CD, and others will just be on the CD," she said. "We have a couple rock pieces. We have a solo piano piece. We have a string piece, and then one's just a complication of a whole bunch of instruments. We're looking for a creative mix. We just want to represent UNM, so whatever is out there's cool."

Submission forms are available in Room 107 of Marron Hall. For more information, e-mail Csw@unm.edu or call (505) 277-5656.
