Abortion in the United States, by definition, is not murder

Editor,

I fully support UNM student Andres Saenz's assertions about the Bible in his Jan. 23 letter in the Daily Lobo. The Bible is reliable in every particular way and is the best-authenticated book from antiquity.

Saenz errs in saying that any abortion performed after the fifth week of pregnancy is "definitely murder." He bases this claim on the fact that after the fifth week, the unborn child has a heartbeat. Murder is defined as the illegal taking of another person's life. Abortion is legal in the United States and in most of the Western world. Hence, it is not murder. It is killing - the legal killing of the unborn child - and whether the child's heart is beating is irrelevant and immaterial.
