Daily Lobo Spotlight

Claire Wright / University studies / Junior

Daily Lobo: How long have you been playing guitar?

Claire Wright: I've been playing guitar about six months.

DL: Why did you pick it up?

CW: Because I like to write and I've always wanted to write songs as well.

DL: Do you know the theory behind the guitar? Or are you just kind of fiddling around?

CW: A little bit. I took piano lessons for quite a few years, so I have basic music training and understanding of the guitar - it's still a foreign object for me.

DL: What do you think about it, then, as an instrument?

CW: I think it's very versatile and obviously a part of many music genres, and it's difficult to play because it's laid out differently - not quite as organized, I guess, as, like, a piano, for example.

DL: Where do you see yourself going with it? What's your goal?

CW: I mostly would like to just write my own songs and hopefully somebody would get enjoyment out of it, besides me.

DL: Do you write poetry?

CW: I do just a lot of travel writing and prose and poetry and lyrics. Yeah, a little bit of everything.

DL: Do you travel a lot?

CW: I do travel. I'm fortunate in that I get to travel quite a bit.

DL: Where have you been?

CW: I've spent a significant amount of time living in Spain. I've also been to France and England and Morocco and Egypt and Jamaica and all over the United States.

DL: Other than travel and guitar, what are your hobbies?

CW: I'm a bicycle mechanic here at the University, in the UNM outdoor shop, and anything that has to do with being outdoors - hiking, climbing, camping, snowboarding.

DL: Is that why you're at the Duck Pond?

CW: Yes, because it's warm and calm and beautiful out here, and also because I have pretty bad stage fright, and so if I play in front of people, then I am able to kind of get over that, sometimes, hopefully.
