Editor,
I am writing in response to Randy Boeglin, UNM dean of students, stating, "If you have weapons in your trunk on the parking lot on the campus, that would be legitimate. If those weapons left your trunk and came out of your car, it would violate our policy."
Is he conceding guns can be carried on campus? In UNM's Pathfinder, it states firearms are not allowed on campus. According to the New Mexico Department of Public Safety Web site under the Conceal and Carry Act of 2005, "Nothing in the Concealed Handgun Carry Act [29-19-1 NMSA 1978] shall be construed as allowing a licensee in possession of a valid concealed handgun license to carry a concealed handgun on school premises, as provided in Section 30-7-2.1 NMSA 1978."
I think Boeglin should clarify his statements. As it currently stands, it seems anyone can carry a weapon on campus as long as it stays in his or her vehicle.
