Lobos overcome feeble start to devastate Falcons

Even the Michelin Man couldn't have prevented this blowout.

On Saturday, the final score from Colorado, Springs, was 73-39 in favor of the UNM women's basketball team over Air Force.

The UNM women's basketball team bullied resident Mountain West Conference foe Air Force, and everybody on the Lobos took their hacks.

All 11 players on UNM's roster scored at least three points. Amy Beggin had a game-high 16 points, while Angela Hartill was good for 11. The Lobos got 10 points from Sara Halasz off the bench.

"You can't stop one person," Beggin said. "It's everybody that's on the court at that time can score and be a threat."

Initially, UNM floundered, flopping its way to a 1-of-15 shooting start and a one-point deficit, 4-3.

Part of those struggles could be attributed to the fact the Lobos didn't have a shoot-around session before the game. Although Beggin thought otherwise.

"We haven't had a shoot around for a couple other games," she said. "We were getting good shots; we just weren't knocking them down."

Beggin explained why UNM wasn't able to get in a session.

"The game was in the afternoon at 2," she said. "The hotel we were staying at was about half an hour away from the gym. It would have been really early and then we wouldn't have had very much time before the game."

Eventually, the shots started to fall. And the Lobos opened up a 22-4 lead, compliments of a 19-0 spurt that covered 7:31. At the intermission, UNM had a commanding 33-12 lead.

"Our goal was to keep them below 49 points," head coach Don Flanagan told GoLobos.com.

For the Lobos, the second half only got better.

UNM shot 53.8 percent from the field and managed an additional 40 points to give it a total of 73.

With the loss, Air Force dropped to 4-11 and 0-2 in the MWC, while UNM improved to 13-2 and 2-0 in league play. However, Beggin said the Falcons' record isn't a good indicator of the team's talent.

"Air Force played really hard," Beggin said. "They competed the whole game. They're not going to be an easy win for anybody."

Maybe not in the future, but they were for the Lobos on Saturday.

Despite out-rebounding the Falcons by only 3, the Lobos forced Air Force into one-and-done possessions, Beggin said.

"We were limiting them to one shot a lot of times," she said. "That's something that really helped us. In the meantime, that defense led to some quick offense."
