American people will pay if stimulus package passes

Editor,

Vice President Joe Biden said, "If we do everything right, there is still a 30 percent chance we will get it wrong" while addressing a meeting of Democrats. He, President Barack Obama, Sen. Harry Reed, Rep. Nancy Pelosi and the entire New Mexican democratic congressional delegation want to borrow $1 trillion to fund their spending plan. This is a plan they say has a 30 percent probability of failure.

Most readers of The Daily Lobo are being saddled with this enormous debt. At best, each job that may be created will cost about $300,000. UNM students will pay greatly increased taxes through your working career to fund this "stimulation plan" that may cause the recession to last longer and to fund organizations and programs that are pet projects of special interest groups. A small percentage of the $1 trillion will go to beneficial and needed construction or to tax relief for the middle class.

How are the American taxpayers benefited by giving the billion-dollar-a-year business Planned Parenthood $200 million to do more abortions in Africa? How many diapers, baby blankets and bottles will not be manufactured because the babies are aborted? How many teachers will not have a job because 7 million American babies are aborted in the next six years? Why should we fund Planned Parenthood and make them rich at the expense of the middle class? More than 15 years of embryonic stem cell research have produced no medical treatments, yet Congress has inserted millions in the "stimulus bill" for this research, but nothing for the nonembryonic research that has given us 62 medical advancements. What sense does this make other than funding a special interest group?

Obama has selected financial advisers who are failures. Those who lost billions of tax dollars in Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae have been rewarded by Obama. Tom Daschle is a tax cheat, as are other cabinet picks. Gov. Bill Richardson has used the tax money of hardworking New Mexicans for his presidential campaign. Remember the $4.5 million airplane we paid for, the presidential hotel rooms and limos that cost thousands, the millions spent for his special advisers' huge security detail and executive chef? Time will tell if he is a crook.

Many students of UNM supported Obama and other Democrats. Now Obama's administration is borrowing from your future paychecks to reward their supporters and taking advice from those who are failures, ensuring a more difficult future for all. Calls to our congressional delegation can stop this trillion-dollar folly and can protect your future paychecks. Sens. Tom Udall and Jeff Bingaman and Rep. Martin Heinrich will listen to you because they want your future vote.
