Editor,
House Bill 383 passed the New Mexico House of Representatives on Friday. As a New Mexico resident and voter, I am disturbed by the blatant attempt to rob New Mexicans of their votes when it comes to choosing our president.
This bill would take New Mexico's five Electoral College votes and give them to whomever won the national popular vote. I understand that the 2000 election is fresh in our memories, and a lot of people did not agree with the outcome (myself included), but New Mexicans deserve our votes to be counted just like every other state in the Union. Why should the citizens of New Mexico sacrifice our votes to please the more populous states?
Also, in response to Keith Andreys, I was not trying to please or persuade you, so if you took offense to my opinions, then my job was done. I will gladly chastise anyone who votes for a president that openly promises to take on two of New Mexico's biggest economic revenue sources and possibly take away 20,000 high-paying jobs. Fossil fuels and defense research and development are very important to New Mexico's economic health whether we like it or not. The money these industries pay into the economy is very important to our state's and UNM's bottom line.
Why exactly do you think the University and our state are facing budget shortfalls? I'll give you a hint: It's not because community organizers have cut back on their spending.
