Editor,
A few weeks ago, Board of Regents President Jamie Koch said he does not have to respond to faculty concerns. I found this so strange because he is the president of the Board of Regents, the highest administrative body at UNM. Don't they have to look after the interest of the University and therefore everyone that is part of it? Doesn't the president of the Board of Regents have the greatest responsibility?
I have been thinking about all these attacks on President David Schmidly, and as much as I agree with the lack of confidence in his administration, I also know that the key players in our beloved University are the regents. This small but powerful part of the administration is appointed by the governor and is the one that selects the person that sits in the President's Office.
We have to realize they have a great deal of responsibility for everything that is happening and that they are the ones running this center for learning and creativity as a corporation. We have to realize that until people don't have the right to elect the University's regents, we are not going to have a fair balance of power. It is time to ask Gov. Bill Richardson to make this a democratic process where people can elect the top administration of UNM. Then the current regents should run if they feel they are the right people for the position.
