President's plan to slash lab budgets not positive change

Editor,

Barack Obama is going to kill New Mexico's economy. When I saw Obama talking about ridding the world of nuclear weapons and killing the missile defense shield, I cringed. I cringed because I knew this was bad news for New Mexico.

I guess the majority of New Mexicans were not listening or are too stupid to connect the dots or were too happy thinking about how they were going to spend their $500 check from Exxon Mobile. I connected the dots because my grandfather from Waukegan, Ill., came to UNM to become a scientist after serving in an underwater demolition team in the Korean War as a Navy SEAL. My father also went to UNM to become an engineer before working for Sandia and Los Alamos national laboratories.

According to the Feb. 6 Albuquerque Journal, Obama is planning on pulling more than $2 billion of funding from Sandia and Los Alamos national labs and sending the nuclear research divisions to Washington, D.C. I am not too confident that Rep. Martin Heinrich (this guy needs to go back where he came from) or those other two new guys will stop Obama in the House, and Sen. Tom Udall probably won't stop him, either. I wish Pete Domenici had stayed because I know he would not let this go down. Heather Wilson probably wouldn't, either.

I don't get it. Give New York bankers $1 trillion and take away $2 billion from New Mexican scientists. That is not change anyone should believe in. Hey, Obama, would you like to slap my mother and kick my dog, too?
