Students may have to pull their own weight, buy bus passes

Editor,

Given the dismal state of the economy, it seems unlikely that the University and the State will continue subsidizing free bus rides for staff and students. It was fun while it lasted, but the time may have come for us to once again pull our own weight.

As a resident of Old Town, I have found the city bus system to be so excellent that I only have to take my car out once a week. I can easily get to work and from one side of town to the other with little or no effort and expense. I am disappointed, however, that UNM Parking and Transportation Services has still not figured out a way for their shuttle buses to drop people off on Lomas Boulevard. A drop-off point at or near Yale Boulevard is essential for UNM commuters who want to transfer to the many city buses and Rapid Ride that service Lomas.

I brought this matter up six months ago and was told in a formal letter from UNM Parking and Transportation Services that "We are evaluating your concern and researching how we can better provide a safe and efficient location for shuttle and bus connections." Well, it's been six months now, and I still don't see any shuttle stops.
