Daily Lobo Spotlight

Julia Tyrolt / Senior / Film

Daily Lobo: You're an exchange student? From where?

Julia Tyrolt: I'm from Germany. Close to Frankfurt. It's a university of applied sciences. I'm the guinea pig. Like, I'm the first person to come here as an exchange student from there.

DL: How does UNM compare?

JT: It is very well-organized, and we don't have to study as much as you Americans here. (Laughs) It's okay. It's okay.. It's great here. I love it, all the courses here, because back in Germany, I do cinematic arts like communication and design. Over here, they're more specified, the courses I do.

always wanted to do it, and I'm so happy that I have the chance to. I don't really know what I'm going to do as a job afterward. It's just so interesting to study.

DL: Is there much of a film scene in Germany?

JT: There is, but much of it is about the Second World War and stuff like that, so it's a bit serious. That's not what I really like.

DL: How do they portray World War II in Germany?

JT: It's getting better now. Like, people don't feel that guilty anymore, I guess, so I think that the German filmmakers think it's an interesting thing to watch from all over the world. That's what they think when they think about Germany.

DL: Has it been interesting learning about World War II from a different perspective?

JT: In my history of animation class, the first avant-garde films and the first animation films . were all about the Second World War, and I'm the only German sitting in there, so everybody was, like, turning around whenever somebody was talking about Germany. It was like, "OK, I'm Julia. I'm not Germany. I'm not the Second World War."

DL: Other than film, what other kinds of hobbies do you have?

JT: I do a lot of photography. I love to travel. I did a study-abroad session in Australia last year, and I just came back from Vegas and Mexico. Now I have to study because I have an exam tomorrow.
