Editor,
My name is Evan Harris, and I am writing to announce my candidacy for ASUNM vice president. Elections are April 15, so I will be tabling around campus as much as possible over the next two weeks. I encourage everyone who decides to vote in the ASUNM elections to come talk to me before casting their ballot.
I have previously served as an ASUNM senator and also as the ASUNM finance chairman, so I am familiar with many of the student organizations on campus and with the workings of our student government. Of late, I have been advocating for the SUB to allow ASUNM candidates to table inside on cold days. I talked to associate vice president for Student Life Walt Miller on Friday. Monday, I met with the director of Student Activities, Debbie Morris. Both were very receptive, and all candidates should be allowed to table indoors soon.
If elected, I will continuously act as a voice for undergraduates. I am especially interested in finding ways to reduce the cost of secondary education, encouraging student lobbying in Santa Fe and strengthening the ties between ASUNM, GPSA, Staff Council and Faculty Senate. I believe that all of these goals are within the role and influence of the ASUNM vice president. As we all know, there is an air of malcontent among these groups with the current state and direction of our beloved institution. Moreover, I feel that we, as undergraduates, need to play a larger role in this movement. I am confident that through collaboration we can move UNM in a better direction.
