Letters to editor should have evidence to back up claims

Editor,

I believe in freedom of speech, but it amazes me why the Daily Lobo would waste paper and ink printing the inane letter to the editor from Ralph Bachli in Wednesday's Daily Lobo.

His point is that "President David Schmidly is perfectly aligned with our future prosperity as part of a global community." However, he provides absolutely no evidence in the letter to back up this claim. All he does in the letter is bring up the conspiracy theory about the Amero, the supposed future currency that will be shared among Canada, the United States and Mexico. Too bad nobody bothered to check Snopes.com to find out that the coin that he was referring to was minted by a private company for novelty purposes. And what does that even have to do with Schmidly?

UNM students: I know some of you might think English 101 and 102 are useless classes (in fact, I majored in math so I would not have to write as many essays), but please pay attention in them. You learn how to write effective arguments, which is an integral part to any academic pursuit. Also, don't bother writing in to the Daily Lobo unless you have evidence to support your claims.
