Men dress in drag to benefit women

"Wonder Women, Super Queens" is a drag performance organized by Marshall Martinez, chairman of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice.

The show is a variety of singing, dancing and dramatic interpretation.

Martinez said he has wanted to do a performance like this for more than a year.

"Basically, it's just going to be a number of performers from here in Albuquerque, mostly friends of mine, all focusing on doing numbers and acts that speak to strong women that are in their lives," Martinez said.

It's at 9 p.m. Saturday at a private club. Tickets are available by calling Martinez at (505) 363-0152 or e-mailing him at Azulymarron@gmail.com.

Martinez said he was raised by women and has a younger sister, so he feels it is important to support and promote women's confidence.

"I am part of a long history of very strong women I have had in my family, none of whom would call themselves feminists if you asked them," Martinez said. "I was raised by a mom and a grandma who were very strong and independent, and they were very clear that their lives were under their control."

Martinez said proceeds will go toward the coalition and a handful of programs, such as a clinic escort service, where volunteers escort women from their cars to a clinic and offer support.

"It's difficult enough to think about what might bring a woman to a situation where she needs to go into a clinic," Martinez said. "She could be going for pregnancy-related health care just as likely as she could be for terminating a pregnancy. But knowing that she is already struggling with that, and then to face some of the things these women face walking from their cars - it's double heart-wrenching for me."

Martinez said most of the performers have a close relationship with their mothers and other empowered women so they responded with enthusiasm to participating in the show.

"Everybody has stepped forward and said they are going to perform a song that maybe reminds them of their mom when they were a kid," Martinez said. "Everyone has really reached out and found something they interpret as representing strong women."

Martinez said the entertainment starts off as a drag show.

"The most frequent comment I get is, 'Oh my God. You look better than any woman I've ever seen,'" he said.

Martinez said there will be an auction after the show with items such as a gift basket from Self Serve, a sex toy shop, to go along with the theme of the show.

"One of things I'm really excited about is what we're calling the glamour-shot package," he said. "We have two local performers who are going to team up and do makeup and hair for whoever wins the package. And then we have a photographer to do a photo shoot."

He said some of the performers will autograph pictures to frame and auction off.
