Column: Protect your computer for free

UNM recently signed a contract to provide UNM students, faculty and staff with Symantec Endpoint Protection antivirus software. The software is available at no cost and can be downloaded at Its.unm.edu/security/antivirus.html. You will be required to enter your UNM NetID and password before downloading the software. Antivirus software is a good first step toward a secure computing environment, and ITS strongly encourages all students, faculty and staff to install and use this software.

The software is available at no cost through ITS, which purchased SEP on behalf of the University to facilitate compliance with University Policy 2520, which mandates active antivirus protection on UNM computers. Having antivirus software reduces the impact of virus outbreaks on the UNM network, helps protect the security and integrity of sensitive information and can help individual productivity and academic success. SEP may also be downloaded and installed on personal machines at home for free.

SEP will be available for download and installation from the ITS download Web page and will require authentication with a valid NetID and password. SEP installs on Windows 2000, XP and Vista, but not on earlier versions of Windows. The software is also available for Macintosh OS and for some Linux distributions. Please note that if you are downloading the software to your office computer that you should first contact your department's IT support staff. You can also contact the ITS Support Center at 277-4848 with technical assistance questions.

If you have questions about SEP or general information security, contact the Information Assurance office at Security@unm.edu.

Jeff Gassaway is a UNM information security officer.
