UNM Student Kerry Lewis was shot and killed in his home near Indian School Road and Rio Grande Boulevard on Friday, July 10.
APD spokesman John Walsh said officers received a call from a nearby gas station about 11:30 p.m. Friday in reference to a "male bleeding from an unknown cause."
Officers found Lewis with a gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to University Hospital in critical condition, where he later died from his injuries.
Witnesses saw two Hispanic males arrive at Lewis' home, Walsh said, and what was at first a confrontation turned into a struggle for a gun.
Witnesses said they heard a gunshot and then saw the two Hispanic males leave, Walsh said.
Police got a search warrant for Lewis' home, which Walsh said is standard practice for homicides.
"We located drug paraphernalia and drugs," Walsh said. "We're looking at this case with the possibility of there being a drug component to it."
Walsh said no arrests have been made in connection with Lewis' death.
Cheo Torres, vice president of Student Affairs, issued a statement Monday on behalf of the University.
"We are just devastated and our sympathies go out to (Lewis') friends and family," he said.
