GPSA vote fails to address really important issues

Editor,

Thank you, GPSA, for proving that there are no real issues currently facing your organization. Your non-binding resolution about head football coach Mike Locksley was a real eye-opener. The courage it took to hold a meeting and then vote on coming out against smacking around staff members is an inspiration to us all. I am glad to know you feel so “strongly” about the issue that your recommendation is: Nothing should happen to him. Oh, I forgot — he should take an anger management class. Now that is tough love.
What other important issues do you plan on tackling this semester?
I recommend a non-binding resolution about Roman Polanski where you come out against rape, strongly of course, and then recommend he talk to someone about it, but no jail time, that would hurt his feelings. Better yet, you can finally end the debate over “Star Wars” or “Star Trek” — that would mean so much to the students of UNM.
To not fire Locksley sets a really bad precedent. But I am sure the GPSA members would understand if a faculty member smacked one of them around. After all, if Coach can do it, why not everyone? It is nice to know that at an institution of higher learning it still comes down to playground rules. Thanks GPSA.
