I am writing to respond to Muhajir Salam’s letter to the Daily Lobo on Oct. 26. In his letter, he states that his UNM courses on Islam promote anti-Muslim stereotypes and sentiments. As director of the Religious Studies Program, I am writing to clarify that our faculty and instructors are dedicated to promoting a fair and accurate understanding of all major world religions.
Our purpose is to provide information about the historical development of these faith traditions, along with an overview of their key beliefs and practices. We do not in any way promote a particular political view of Islam or any other religion. We are deeply saddened by the anti-Islamic sentiment that this letter has generated.
