'Doing it in the Duke City' pure pornographic material

Editor,

In regards to Dec. 10 “Doing it in the Duke City:”
Before I start, I must say that I understand that the Daily Lobo is a business that must attract outside advertisement revenue in order to achieve a profit. I also understand that columns in a “culture” section have a diverse feel to them that allow patrons of the paper to explore their world and surroundings. I am also not a prude.
However, in regards to the “Doing it in the Duke City,” voyeur adventure, I could not be more disappointed in the Daily Lobo, allowing such a pornographic exploration to occur in a newspaper. Look, I am not against gays. I am against reading the opening scene to some kind of creepy porn scene. If I want to read about “sexual liberations” with wet teenage college girls drinking booze, smoking cigarettes and making out in the rain I will just go to my neighborhood porn shop. I don’t want to open up my University newspaper and have to see a poor excuse of journalism in a lame attempt to catch the interest of horny college students in order to sell advertising space to AHL Garden Supply.
Why would you lower Daily Lobo standards so much? Do you understand that you have been an independent voice of UNM for over 110 years? It’s a student ran organization with many aspiring editors. Why would an editor consider porn in the newspaper and then want to turn around and call itself a credible news source?
In a “culture” section of a newspaper, I would rather not read about real-life encounters of porn from my fellow classmates. Why not enlighten us with Greek festivals, concerts — hell, why not beer fests somewhere? Rather, the Daily Lobo feels it’s more important to feed us all with a localized version of the back page of Penthouse.
According to Dictionary.com, “culture” is defined as: “the quality in a person or society that arises from a concern for what is regarded as excellent in arts, letters, manners, scholarly pursuits, etc.”
To some who call “Doing it in the Duke City” culture, it is an insult to the intelligence of the entire institution of the University of New Mexico.
Shame on you Daily Lobo! And we all wonder why newspapers are dying in this country.
