Editor,
When I read Thursday’s paper I was mad.
To see people get upset about a political cartoon, really? Don’t get me wrong — the United States of America has a history of slavery, and we look down on ourselves for it. However, it is just a cartoon. It is not trying to justify slavery. It is a reference to “The Lion King,” not to African-Americans being less than human.
African-Americans used to be slaves in U.S. from the early 1600s to the late 1800s, but that doesn’t mean the artist is trying to depict them as slaves now.
Even though this cartoon was approved, and even though the Daily Lobo has promised to be more sensitive in the future, they shouldn’t.
Should we stop doing everything because it upsets a group of people?
The cartoon is appropriate, especially since we have been looking for Osama bin Laden for so long. We owe it to ourselves and the families of the victims of 9/11. If anything, this political cartoon is depicting patriotism. It is selfish for people to turn it over into “racism.”
