Obama’s foreign policy just as bellicose as Bush’s

Editor’s note: This is in response to the letter “Foreign policies based on hope leave U.S. weak,” published in Thursday’s Daily Lobo. In the letter, reader Allen E. Weh called for a more realistic approach than operating on hope in this country, citing our foreign policy response to the recent murders of the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans in Libya.

Editor,

In response to Allen E. Weh’s letter, I can’t help but notice the fallacies in his letter. First of all, the government has very much maintained the same foreign policies from the Bush era under the current administration, and in some areas has expanded them.

Obama has increased the number of troops in Afghanistan and greatly moved toward a war in Iran and Yemen. He has ordered the execution of Americans abroad. More people have been killed by drone attacks under this administration than the previous one.

Mr. Weh, I don’t know where you’ve been the past three years, but this country has been basically on the same track since 2008. And as for these riots going on all over the Middle East, don’t you think it might be something more than just a poorly made film produced by a convicted felon? That a lot of those people might resent this country for — oh, I don’t know — bombing the hell out of them on a daily basis? Sure, we helped them oust some of their ruthless dictators — the ones we put in charge in the first place.

Maybe it’s time we try something other than bombing every country we “think” is a threat to us. Not to mention all these wars are still unpaid for and are continuing to be major contributors to our debt. Oh, and “radical Islamist”? Please, the Bush-Cheney era is over.
