Students suffer and coaches reap rewards

Editor,

An open letter to the UNM Board of Regents:

Outraged. That is our response to the front page Albuquerque Journal article on Sept. 9: “Lobo basketball coach Craig Neal just got a pay raise to $950,000 per year: IS HE WORTH IT?”

No, no, no. And not only no, but hell no. I know you are going to say that this money comes from Athletics income, but it is a state-owned tax-supported school. This outrageous money put into athletics at an educational agency of our state is totally unacceptable. This and other coaches be paid more than a million dollars (with benefits and perks)?

Why should my daughter (right now) be in debt to over her ears to get a degree from UNM and want to go to graduate school there and do it with two children under the age of 3 – full load in every respect – and coaches and athletes be treated like gods and prima donnas and be paid 700 times in one year of what I was paid in a hardworking job for 60 years?

What about the paltry pay for aides, assistants, teachers, professionals, janitors, office personnel and campus police?

What about the marginally middle class and poor who can’t get the money without great debt to go to our state school?

How come our institutions of higher education cannot just focus on the best education possible for the most students possible?

We are tired of such disparity and you should all be fired if you can’t do anything about it.
