Editor,
I am very grateful to the Women’s Resource Center for sponsoring important talks about communication, consent and creating a safe community at UNM.
No woman should come to UNM for an education and end up with a sexual assault. Survivors of sexual assault often drop out, while the predators (research shows that most campus rapes are perpetrated by serial rapists) remain on campus and graduate. This must end. We must create a culture that no longer gives rapists cover.
The talk I attended focused on communication, consent, slut shaming and the bystander effect with references to the idea that sexual activity can be enjoyable. These types of programs are absolutely necessary, and it was courageous of the Women’s Resource Center to take the lead for the campus community.
