Editor,
I was quite surprised to see an Oct. 12 Las Cruces Sun-News op-ed piece by someone claiming to be the New Mexico lieutenant governor. Then I checked and there is a guy by the name of John Sanchez serving as lieutenant governor.
The problem is no one knows who he is, what he does, what he hasn’t done, or if he even shows up for work.
Ask 10 people on the street and I’ll bet not one can tell you who the lieutenant governor of New Mexico is. His name isn’t even mentioned in any Martinez campaign advertising. Is she ashamed to be connected to him?
The piece written by John Sanchez makes it sound like Susana Martinez is running against Bill Richardson. Without going into the details, he states that Susana has cleaned up Richardson’s mess. He states that we are better off today than we were four years ago. If you really want to know if “we” are better off today, ask the hundreds of teachers leaving the state or the folks in the unemployment line.
My daughter, who is attending UNM, majoring in Early Childhood Education and working at a local preschool, has expressed her serious concerns about continuing on and becoming a teacher in New Mexico. She has brought home horror stories from teachers she interacts with. They constantly complain about the over-testing and the mistrust of the Martinez administration and her embattled Secretary of Education Hanna Skandera.
Why is it that Susana can’t run against Gary King? We know she has not only turned down almost every debate invitation, but has also failed to even give courtesy responses to debate invitations in a reasonable timeframe or manner. What is she afraid of? The answer is clear: She’s afraid of having to stand up and talk about the real issues and what she would do about them in a second term. She knows full well that an issue face off with Gary King would be disastrous, so she avoids it at all costs.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey Paul
